Welcoming in the New Decade

Today we not only launched a New Year but we also began a new decade.  We can enter this new decade with fear, and trepidation, or we can enter it with love, and hope for the future.  We may even be experiencing all of the above and more.

Let us now imagine this new decade as one where we finally find the answers for a peaceful co-existence for all of us and in a safe and protected environment.

We can do this by first listening to our hearts and letting the light within our hearts lead the way.  When we get discouraged, let us look to our hearts for the answers and let our “Yin Spirit” shine forth by sharing the gifts of our hearts with others.  Generate an optimistic attitude and see how it becomes contagious with those around us.

Let us also look for the true leaders out there, maybe not the well known ones, but those people getting the job done anyway.  I can think of organizations that are working on the issue of world hunger, for example, The Hunger Project, whose leaders have found practical, sustainable solutions for many impoverished communities in resolving their own hunger.

There is also the Pachamama Alliance, whose leaders are working on preserving the Earth’s tropical rain forest by empowering the indigenous people who are their natural custodians.

In Chicago, a true leader, Marva Collins, went into an impoverished neighborhood of Chicago and opened The Westside Preparatory School.  She applied “classical education”, which became a phenomenal educational and commercial success.  She was then asked to supervise in many public schools.

These few are among hundreds of thousands of leaders working to improve our communities.  Maybe it could be a New Years resolution to find these leaders in our own communities and support them.  These individuals and organizations are the ones that have the actual proven results that work.

Our hope is in these leaders who on on the ground quietly getting  the job done.  May we find these leaders, celebrate them, encourage them, and support all that they do.  They are the change that we have been looking for and the promise for a new world of peace and harmony.  Welcome to this new decade of hope as we all create this change together.

Let this be our Harambee movement of the New Decade.  Find the leaders in our own communities and, as in the African meaning of Harambee, let us “pull together”.  None of us can do this alone but we can do this together.  I will be happy to post the names of these individual leaders and/or organizations on my website under the banner of  “The Harambee Movers”.

As Margaret Mead so eloquently said:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world;  indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Panda Heart Publishing, Inc. wishes you to a joyous, healthy, and prosperous New Year and New Decade filled with love and peace.  May we all find and radiate our own “Yin Spirit”.

“The time of the lone wolf is over.  Gather yourselves!  Banish the word struggle from your attitude and your vocabulary!   All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration!  We are the ones we’ve been waiting for!” ……Hopi prophecy from Elders in Arizona

We don’t often get a chance to reflect on the wisdom of those who walked this earth long before we arrived, but when we do take that opportunity, we can really take in the depth of who we are.

It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day struggles, expecting someone to come in and “bail us out” of our situations.  We live in an age of instant gratification and advertisers are constantly telling us what we need to make us happy.

Our ancestors, however, knew that we are far more capable than we realize and that when it comes down to who will actually do the actions and provide what we need, it will be ourselves.   “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for!”

It will be those of us willing to stand up and do the necessary next steps to take care of ourselves and each other.  Waiting for a mythical program or agency to come in and rescue us only leaves us vulnerable and needy.

Many of us live in some of the wealthiest areas in the world and we have resources that we have yet to tap.  We must all unleash our creative abilities and tap into our resources, especially our inner resources, to discover what is needed and what we must do next.

Let’s unleash our gifts and talents and join together as communities.  Find out what is missing from our communities to make them whole, and complete.  When we discover those things that are missing and work together to do the work, we will become alive, energized, and truly beautiful.   “We ARE the ones we’ve been waiting for!”

Living In the Present

“Every man’s life lies within the present; for the past is spent and done with, and the future is uncertain.”
~ Marcus Aurelius

I was recently reminded of this reality when I read a blog yesterday.  How much of our time do we spend concerned with the past or worrying about what our future holds in the wake of such turmoil and apparent chaos?

It is important that in our anxiety about what lies ahead, we don’t lose sight of where we are right now.  Are there any actions that we need to be taking ?  Most importantly, are we sharing the gifts we hold in our hearts with those around us?  Are we acknowledging each other, and are we giving and receiving the love and light that is within us?

These are all the things that are in our present, here and now.  None of us knows what lies ahead, but we can remain focused on who we really are and experience and enjoy our own humanity.  If we can act together, focusing on peace and sharing our love, maybe we can actually change the course of history and help determine our own future.

We can only control our own actions, but by setting an example of peaceful co-existence, by shining our lights in the darkness, we can change the world.  Imagine all of us shining our lights together and the illumination we could create.  This is the Harambee Movement.

Actions of a Harambee Movement

What does it really mean to pull together in a “Harambee Movement”?  It is no easy task for us to all pull together.  When I look at our current landscape, we all seem to be more divided than ever.  We tend to take positions on one side or the other and get locked in.  Sometimes it is so difficult to experience another point of view, we reduce the situation to just making judgments of each other.

When we take a position on something, we automatically elicit the opposing position.  It just seems to happen that way.   However, when we take a stand for something, from our hearts, their is no place for an opposing position.  For example, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. took the stand that, “All people should be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”, who could oppose this stand?

Maybe what’s missing today is that we are not taking a stand for something.  What if, for example, we took a stand for all people in our country to have access to quality health care?  This would not mean we take a stand for someone’s specific solution for health care, but rather, we take a stand for the vision of everyone having access to quality health care in our country.

Then we fully examine what is missing that is preventing this vision from being realized.  We could follow with a thorough needs assessment, maybe in specific communities since each community has their own needs.   The true answers are out there waiting for us to come together, supporting each other and keeping our stand, our vision, always in front of us guiding our actions.

There is no real “quick fix” for anything as important as our own personal health care.  This will be a long journey in order to get it right and we will definitely have to think out of the box, but we can pull together and do this.  These are the actions of a “Harambee Movement”.

How Can We Create Peace?

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
- Mother Teresa

In pulling together in the “Harambee Movement“, it is important that we recognize that we truly do belong to each other.  We are all so connected that every one of our actions has a definite impact on all of us.  Each of our decisions impacts us individually, and locally as well as globally.

Our economic systems are so linked together that what we do today will have after shocks felt around the world.  Decisions that we make for our planet will be experienced for many generations to come.  We can no longer pretend to be in isolation, living on a quiet island in the middle of the sea.

The good news is that when we do pull together and let our lights shine form our hearts, we create a glow of warmth that is also felt around the world.  It becomes contagious, it becomes electrifying, …it is as if a star was born.  The beauty of pulling together is that we are able to magnify all that we are.

We expand our ability to give and increase the gifts of our hearts.  We experience the energy of love in all that we do.  If we truly belong to each other and we all desire peace, then what is holding us back from creating this reality?  We have everything we need inside of our hearts.  Let us all get on with the “Harambee Movement”, pull together and continue sharing the gifts of our hearts.  It is what is truly needed in our world.

It Is Now Time For the “Harambee Movement”

“With the extensive and far-reaching global challenges that we face today, we can no longer place the emphasis on our cultural, racial, religious, political, or other differences.  They have created too many barriers.  We must transcend these barriers and find the place within us where we can come together as one human family.  We are in this global community together.  We must come together in the spirit of harmony, utilizing the highest potential of the human heart.  As human beings, we must be clear that in this world we are going to make it together or we are going to fail.”  ……Presented by Suzanne Mulcahy at The UN on March 21, 2005

In East Africa, the Swahili language has a word that describes what is needed to start a new project or movement.  This word is “harambee”, which means pull together.  The African people know that their commitment to working together is an absolute necessity in resolving their own hunger and survival needs.  A “harambee” comes out of their natural expression of community spirit.

When I view the landscape that occupies so much of our lives today it seems so full of words that divide us further and further apart as a society.  We have become so polarized that it is hard to speak to one another.

What is it that we all really want?  It seems that we all long to live together in harmony so what is the root of so much division.  What if we could all rise above the things that separate us now and get beyond these barriers.  We must come together for all of our sakes.

When we make decisions from our hearts, it always brings out the best solutions for all of us.  It is only in the absence of the heart that these breakdowns can occur.   We are blessed with so much rich diversity all around us, each of us with so many gifts to share and hearts that can potentially light up the world.

Let us shine these lights on the love and compassion we all hold within our hearts and create a “Harambee Movement”.  We can pull together, like our sisters and brothers in Africa, for our own survival needs.  The Earth and all of us living here depend on our creating this wave of love and appreciation for all.  It is now time for the “Harambee Movement”.
