How Can We Create Peace?

“If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.
- Mother Teresa

In pulling together in the “Harambee Movement“, it is important that we recognize that we truly do belong to each other.  We are all so connected that every one of our actions has a definite impact on all of us.  Each of our decisions impacts us individually, and locally as well as globally.

Our economic systems are so linked together that what we do today will have after shocks felt around the world.  Decisions that we make for our planet will be experienced for many generations to come.  We can no longer pretend to be in isolation, living on a quiet island in the middle of the sea.

The good news is that when we do pull together and let our lights shine form our hearts, we create a glow of warmth that is also felt around the world.  It becomes contagious, it becomes electrifying, …it is as if a star was born.  The beauty of pulling together is that we are able to magnify all that we are.

We expand our ability to give and increase the gifts of our hearts.  We experience the energy of love in all that we do.  If we truly belong to each other and we all desire peace, then what is holding us back from creating this reality?  We have everything we need inside of our hearts.  Let us all get on with the “Harambee Movement”, pull together and continue sharing the gifts of our hearts.  It is what is truly needed in our world.

It Is Now Time For the “Harambee Movement”

“With the extensive and far-reaching global challenges that we face today, we can no longer place the emphasis on our cultural, racial, religious, political, or other differences.  They have created too many barriers.  We must transcend these barriers and find the place within us where we can come together as one human family.  We are in this global community together.  We must come together in the spirit of harmony, utilizing the highest potential of the human heart.  As human beings, we must be clear that in this world we are going to make it together or we are going to fail.”  ……Presented by Suzanne Mulcahy at The UN on March 21, 2005

In East Africa, the Swahili language has a word that describes what is needed to start a new project or movement.  This word is “harambee”, which means pull together.  The African people know that their commitment to working together is an absolute necessity in resolving their own hunger and survival needs.  A “harambee” comes out of their natural expression of community spirit.

When I view the landscape that occupies so much of our lives today it seems so full of words that divide us further and further apart as a society.  We have become so polarized that it is hard to speak to one another.

What is it that we all really want?  It seems that we all long to live together in harmony so what is the root of so much division.  What if we could all rise above the things that separate us now and get beyond these barriers.  We must come together for all of our sakes.

When we make decisions from our hearts, it always brings out the best solutions for all of us.  It is only in the absence of the heart that these breakdowns can occur.   We are blessed with so much rich diversity all around us, each of us with so many gifts to share and hearts that can potentially light up the world.

Let us shine these lights on the love and compassion we all hold within our hearts and create a “Harambee Movement”.  We can pull together, like our sisters and brothers in Africa, for our own survival needs.  The Earth and all of us living here depend on our creating this wave of love and appreciation for all.  It is now time for the “Harambee Movement”.

Defining “Yin Spirit”

A wonderful person was reading my definition of  “Yin Spirit”, which is “Sharing the heart of our humanity with the world”, and made the following comment:

“Ohh!  That’s a good idea.   Why is it called YIN Spirit?   Yin is the one that is more allowing and receiving and darker and less intense…   Why did you choose that name?”

After I reviewed the meaning of “Yin” and “Yang” and reflected on why I chose “Yin Spirit”, I realized that I needed to provide a more complete explanation of its true meaning.

Yin is an energy that must always be in balance with Yang.  Yin is the dark with the circle of light.  It is in times of darkness that we must all focus on the light within us no matter what the circumstances.  The light within us is our spirit, our primary essence, the core of who we really are.  It is up to us to magnify this light and bring it to any darkness we find in the world.

Imagine a world in complete darkness.  Inside each one of us is a powerful light shinning forth from our hearts, but we sometimes withhold this light, cover it, or even pretend it does not exist.  We choose to remain in this darkness.

Now imagine all of us letting our lights shine forth into the darkness, radiant and full of life and love as only the heart can be…..all of us releasing our own human spirits, our own humanity, the true nature of who we really are.  Imagine the world we could create and the incredible peace that would become our new reality.

It is sometimes in our darkest moments that we finally experience our true light.  Let us all choose to let our lights shine forth in the darkness.  Our hearts and our capacity to love is the brightest of all lights.  We are the only ones who can bring this illumination to the world.

Being In Appreciation

Many years ago, we were taught a concept involving the words, “Be, Do, and Have.  In the older traditional model we used the words in the following manner:

DO: (The behavior that would bring you what you desired or who you desired to be. )   HAVE:   (Then you would have the rewards of your actions.)   and  BE: (You would ultimately become the person you wanted to be.)

Then there was a new way of looking at these words that was a “break-through” at the time.

BE: (Be the person you want to be, for example, a dancer, an artist, a baseball player, etc.)      DO: (Then do the behavior that is in line with what you desire.)   and  HAVE: (Finally having the rewards of being who you are.)

What would it look like if we took another approach to this concept?

BE: (Be the incredible persons we already are.  Discover the miraculous gifts that we have inside of our hearts, the beauty  that lies within.  We have the gifts of love, kindness, friendship, compassion etc., as well as our own unique individual gifts and talents.)

DO: ( Do only those actions that are consistent with our hearts and share our extraordinary gifts with others.)

Have: (Whatever we already have brings all the happiness we desire.  The rewards are in the feelings of gratitude and appreciation   for who we really are.

At the core of the human species is our humanity, our ability to love and be loved, and be in relationships with one another.  Our capacity to love is unlimited and we can access this love every time we look into our hearts.  This is the greatest gift of all and one we can claim at any moment with gratitude and the full appreciation for being who we are.
